MomakuCalligraphy by Judth Dowling of the Japanese kanji for retina: Momaku. Mo, the upper character, means "net". Maku, the lower character, means "membrane."This is adapted from the title page of The Retina: an approachable part of the brain, by John E. Dowling (Cambridge, Mass.: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1987). Highly recommended! Mr. Ogawa of Toshiba pointed out to me, via Greg De Priest, that Judith Dowling's character is in old-style Kanji. I have added the horizontal bar at the top of the lower-left character, so as to present the modern character. Charles Poynton |
