This course introduces the science behind image digitization, tone reproduction, and colour reproduction in the domains of computer-generated imagery (CGI), studio video, film, and offset printing. The course covers the following topics:

• Explanation and demonstration of the colour science that underlies each of the four domains
• How colour is represented and processed as images are transferred across the domains
• Why the RGB of one system doesn't necessarily match the RGB of another
• How nonlinear coding ("gamma") is used
• How monitor calibration works, How to calibrate monitors accurately
• Explanation of colour measurement instruments, including densitometers and colourimeters
• Introduction to Colour Management Systems

Audience
This course is appropriate for people who are experienced in creating and manipulating colour imagery, including technical directors, colourists, and visual effects supervisors. It is also suitable for programmers and engineers.

Materials provided: Attendees will receive a copy of the book, A Technical Introduction to Digital Video, along with course note handouts. Lunch is provided on Day 1.

Prerequisite: None.
