Digital Video and HDTV:

Pixels, Pictures, and Perception

The expanded and revised successor to Technical Introduction to Digital Video was planned to be entitled Digital Video and HDTV: Pixels, Pictures, and Perception ("DVPPP"), and was planned to be published (like TIDV) by John Wiley & Sons. Through circumstances that I won't discuss here, Wiley and I dissolved that contract, and the new book will be published by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers.

Although online book sales now account for roughly 2/3 of technical book sales, systems for exchange of information between publishers and online retailers are, shall we say, not yet well structured. Once information is released to the retailers (through intermediaries known as "database miners"), it is very difficult to change. Information previously released by Wiley about DVPPP remains on the web sites of many retailers; the information has not been updated, and I have no estimate of when it might be updated. Take for example Amazon's claim for DVPPP at 2001-08-08 of "Availability: In stock in 1 to 2 weeks"! The book isn't even finished yet! The outrageous claim is due to Wiley's having informed Amazon, a year ago, that the book would ship in June. Even though Amazon has never received a book, some cheerful computer there has declared "It's past June - this book must now be in stock!" And Wiley's computer apparently has not (and cannot) inform Amazon's computer of the updated situation. Curious, eh?

As a consequence of this sad state of affairs, Wiley "asked" (so to speak) that I change the title of the book, to avoid confusion in the marketplace.

Enough ranting! See Digital Video and HDTV Algorithms and Interfaces.
